I've been having really bad back-aches lately. I've to crack my back every 30 minutes, which sucks as even if I'm in bed getting ready to doze off, I still have to get up and crack it. Fuck.

Saw Constantine today. If you haven't seen it, you aren't missing much, you aren't missing anything actually. Just Rachel Weiz's wet-t-shirt bits, Keanu's weak attempt at trying to be a chain smoker and a bad-ass (he really should've stopped acting after he did Bill and Ted).

Oh well.

Thursday, February 24, 2005

Oh no. Just two weeks after Iris bought her iPod mini, the new ones roll out, and the old ones prices roll back. Yowza. She's going to get pissed...I know it...Here's crossing my fingers that an iPod mini with color doesn't come out anytime soon...

Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005)

Rest in Peace, king of gonzo. :-(

Apparently, he took his own life. More info after the jump.

--

On to better news.

Sideways is out. Watch it for the love of God! One of the best films I've seen this year. Forget Constantine (which I haven't seen, and by the looks of it, I'm not missing much -- except for Keanu's horrid acting, which is good).

Very busy right now. Though, I'm taking a break to send this piece of news in.

The EOS Digital Rebel XT 350D (?)!!!!!!!!!!

Check out threadless.com's shirts. They ship to the Philippines, but with an $8 shipping fee, plus again the risk of getting your package messed up in customs (not counting probably being charged for the tax) I don't think it's worth the effort. Then again, I heard somewhere that if you ship to somewhere in the province, say for my case Dagupan, the tax I have to pay for packages is waived? Anyway. Check out their shirts! Coolness, I tell ya.

jollibee in a webcomic

Oh. I stumbled upon this c/o my cousin TJ.

Jollibee's stint as a webcomic character! Haha!

Just in case the webcomic issue changes, go back to PPG Chapter 5 page 13, and 14.

s.f post

I went to San Francisco when I visited Marco in San Jose. S.F is a good 1 hour 45 minute train ride from San Jose -- a round trip ticket (SJ to SF) on the CALTRAIN cost us $11 ea. Pretty good considering not having to pay SF's crazy parking rates plus actually not having to deal with parking in SF (it didn't look that any parking slot was easy to get into or out of!). Anyway here's a bunch of pictures I took when we were there.

sfview

You ain't in Kansas anymore, boy. When I saw this, I knew I was in SF. I took this while we were on the train.

downtownsf

Here's what downtown SF looks like. This was a hard shot to take, as there was this big ass trolley coming behind me when I took this.

sfblond

This pizza joint is supposed to be very popular in the SF area. They had big, and I mean big (say the size of a big plate, and then some) servings, too. A couple of blocks later we run into Agot Isidro who was walking with her husband, I think. Hehe

Later into the day, it got really cold so we headed down to the wharf. That's Alcatraz over there; most of the Alcatraz tours were cancelled for the day 'cuz it was just too freaking cold!

Me in my tourist-pose. Hehe! Notice everyone, 'cept for the bum behind me heading for the warmth of the shops.

While people headed for the restaurants. We grabbed some chowder, and went for the warmth of beers and the company of warm-people. Mwahaha! The happiest place on earth? And to people who know Marco personally, that IS him. Hehe! Talk about weight loss! And he used to weigh more than me -- post-diabetes weight loss, ha. Metal! (said ala-ROCK! but with the heavy Pinoy-street-slang accent) MEH-TAHL!

picture picture

Here's a post-load-of-pictures.

Iris took a couple of pictures with my camera during the concert she went to last night. Kjwon, Bamboo, and I think Spongecola headlined the concert last night. Wish I was there. Here's one of the pictures she took during Kjwon's set.

iriskjwon

Here're pictures of Iris's dog, Michiko. Now I've to take pictures of Tulip. I'll try to do that tomorrow.

michi

Michi pa-cute pose.

michi2

Michi artsy-snob pose.

michi3

Michi humping my leg. And she's a bitch, ha! Weird.

michi4

She probably noticed we were taking pictures of her, so she goes on posing.

michi5

And posing.

Lastly, here are the pictures I took when I visited Nucleus. They had a Ninja Art show going on when we were there (I think it wraps up today). So naturally I took pictures of my favourite pieces, and the shop, of course. I did have to turn off the flash on my camera (as a courtesy and I think store policy, too) -- so I think some of the pictures didn't turn out too well. It's all about the lighting baby. Tsk.

nucleuscashier

A shot of the cashier's POV. To the left of the picture you can see the toy section of the store, there's a stack of toys fronting the cashier, too. That stack of books you see to the right are mostly art-books, coffee-table books, and indie title-books. There was a lack, rather, NO Marvel, DC/Vertigo book in sight when I was there.

nucleusfrontdesk

Here's a view of the cashiee/front-desk with the shelf of mostly-quarterly-released-comic-artists' magazines; oh and next to that are the candy/food stuffs for sale. Cool, huh? The candies were mostly from Japan.

nucleuslounge

There was this comfy-lounge area ala-Isotope. Plus you can see the store-front display.

nucleusshelf

The Flight Vol.1 stack of books, Japanese-manga/anime-art books.

nucleusshelfbooks

That Cowboy Bebop movie-art book and Adrian Tomine Scrapbook had me drooling.

nucleusshelftoys1

Toys toys toys! Kubricks, Plush dolls, etc. etc. galore!

nucleusshelftoys

More toys.

nucleusshirts

Nucleus' hip and artsy selection of shirts. One of their, I guess, selling points as there was a couple of people who were busy trying on stuff (not minding too much the fanboys going through the books around them). The t-shirts they sell are actually pretty cool. Pricey, but still cool enough that you'd probably be able to strike up a conversation or get a compliment with the designs they had on them.

nucleusview

Big store, huh?

nucleusviewtofront

Check out that neat refrigerator.

nucleusref

Closer view of the ref.

nucleusgallery

The entrance to the exhibit.

nucleusninja2

The lower-middle-framed-artwork's by Kazu called "Ninja in the Snow". I was liking the one to the left of that, "Bad Ass No. 1" by Albert Carranza.

nucleusninja3

The ninja-sculpture to the right was aptly named: "Digital Camera Ninja" and is by Chris Truax. One of my other favourites.

nucleusninja

Now you've gotta love that! ;-) "Heck Ninja" by miQ willmOtt.

More, better photos of the show thru Nucleus' site. :-)

Coca-cola in the Philippines article, and a bit of gaming on the side

Got this through boingboing. It's a link to an article about Coca-cola promoting its presence here during the 1950's.

Oh and another "iteration" Rockstar's GTA series. Apparently, the PSP will receive its own port of the GTA game (not the San Andreas expansion, though). Microsoft's XBOX, come June '05 will receive its own version of the game which PS2 owners like me have been playing since June -- GTA: San Andreas, will get its own port to the XBOX. I wonder, with the change of console-platforms, will there be new features, and gameplay improvements (I doubt any improvements to loading times will be one of these, as GTA: SA, on the PS2 has almost NO loading times -- save for the times you enter buildings; which is tolerable compared to having to encounter GTA: Vice City's loading screens everytime you crossed the two main bridges of Vice City).

There's a Scarface game coming out, even a Godfather game! I think both movie-to-game ports will suck. I mean, some companies are just trying too hard to break into the criminal-crime-action/adventure-game genre which Rockstar's GTA franchise just dominates. You can only do so much with these two movie titles. I mean, back when Mafia was released, it didn't have to rely on an underlying story or background for the story to follow, or even dictate the gameplay. There was always this feel of actually playing the part of a "mobster". With Scarface and The Godfather games, other than twisting the story into something new, or giving it an open-ended gameplay experience (which could be an almost impossible task given the legal and or entertainment issues developers might face), it'll just be a linear-you-know-what'll-happen-game. Here's hoping they pull off a Spider-man movie-to-game port, and not a Fight Club movie-to-game-port failure.

steady friday

And here I was thinking my Friday was going to be boring. I was actually planning to just sleep it out, since Iris was out with her friends watching a concert in Bulacan. And most of my friends were either out somewhere or just didn't want to go out because of Friday night traffic.

Anyway good thing Lia wasn't doing anything too big tonight, just hanging out with Artie and her über cool/cute/horny dog Nachos. So I hung out with them, watched Wimbledon (which wasn't half as bad, even if some parts were too mushy mwahaha.... -- OK OK I probably liked it maybe just because Kirsten Dunst was in it, hehe ;-)

I wish I took pictures of Nachos and him "chillin" on my tummy! Hmmm..Just head on over to Lia's blog. She probably has pictures of him.

So yeah. And I was able to pick up The Getaway: Black Monday, which I've been waiting for ever since I saw trailers of it. Still haven't gone through much of it, though. The driving physics could've used some more tweaking; the cars behave like beach balls when they bump into something so do the people you bump into. More on that when I get to play more of the game. IF I get some time off from making the damn thesis.

ukay-ukay

I've been reading a lot about people going to ukay-ukay's here in the Metro; but I've still to find out where these places are! The only ukay-ukay place I know of is in Baguio! Haha! Not that I'm hoping to find something to fit me in the local ukay-ukay's (find me size 13 shoes and I'll kiss you..) but I'd love to take Iris to one of those places sometime. So anyone know where the local, meaning within Metro Manila, ukay-ukay's are?

ukay-ukay is a place which has people selling "used"/"second-hand" or clearance items, I think. Much like a flea-market?

I'm off to my Endocrinologist Tita tomorrow. Yep. Getting my first insulin kit! Time to overcome my needle/syringe/anything-pointed-entering-my-skin-phobia. Tae. Diabetes sucks. Plus all the tikoy-boxes just had to come in today.

Tikoy is a form of pudding which is commonly seen around Filipino-Chinese/Chinese-Filipino friends houses during the Chinese New Year. What it essentially symbolizes, beats me. But it's supposed to be made of either brown or white sugar (brown sugar = brown tikoy white sugar = white tikoy)

of toys and comics

While surfing through The Cult of Mac Blog, I saw this article about an artist named Tomi who's doing a limited run of little iPod people from little Lego figures. At $17 each, they're a bit pricey, but what the heck, if I had the guy shipped to the P.I and I had some extra cash -- I'd get these. Reminds me a lot about the Kubrick figures I see a lot of nowadays.

Oh and I've just started reading Alan Moore's Swamp Thing Vol. 1: Saga of the Swamp Thing. Frustrates me to realize that I've missed out on something this beautfiul until now, but makes me a bit happy since at least now I can read Alan Moore's run in all of it's entirety.

I was by a local comic book shop yesterday. And I just fell in love with this:

I might pick it up if I get to save enough cash for it. The statue has an asking price of around Php 3,200. Hmm..It's quite small, just about 5 inches tall if my memory serves me right..Oh well.

Dave Matthews Band and Bonnaroo

DMB's coming out with a new studio album and the third volume of their live trax series, DMB Live Vol. 3 8.27.2000 Meadows Music Theatre. Oh what I'd do to get my hands on that. Alas, DMB's warehouse doesn't seem to ship to the Philippines, and even if they did I'd be paying a fortune for shipping and handling -- plus there's always the risk of losing the shipment, oh with the lousy postal system we have here in the P.I. Me and my cousins have had bad experiences like losing CD's, letters, magazines, you name it.

--

The 2005 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival artist list is coming out to be a pretty dang good one. DMB, Bela Fleck, The Black Crowes, and The John Butler Trio -- goodness gracious, I feel bad already that I'm going to miss it.
Found this just today. An old NPR interview with Conan O'Brien prior to his 10th Anniversary Special. The streaming audio file is available here.

Flight pimping

So I finally got my copy of Flight. I was able to score a copy of the poster and Jason even had my poster signed by Kazu Kibuishi (who's behind the whole Flight project). I got my copy of Flight from Nucleus -- one of the best comic stores I've been able to visit during my trip to the US. Isotope and Meltdown being two other comics shops which essentially blew me away (selection and layout-wise) the moment I stepped into their doors. I'll post about my visit to these comic shops soon. ;-)

Flight Volume Two is coming out March 23. I think Jeff Smith'll be on this volume of Flight!

I just learned from my mom that the toll-fee's over at that north luzon expressway (NLEX) which they take weekly (my mom and dad work in our province of Pangasinan, Dagupan) have balooned to over 300% of what it used to be. NLEX used to cost around Php 40 from end to end, starting 12AM tonight, I think it'll cost about Php 200 ONE WAY. Talk about hiking up the prices. Good thing this hasn't happened to the south luzon expressway (SLEX) which my siblings and myself take on a daily basis going to and from school.

American Dad!

So I got to watch the pilot for American Dad. Loved it. Has a lot of Family Guy moments in it, well both are created by the same person so I kinda expected that. Thanks to my cousins from Chino Hills, and my Ate Orange (who I miss dearly) for getting me hooked on Family Guy.

I've still to bring myself to upload the lot of pictures I took during my US trip. Must must must upload and share.....

I've been listening to a lot of Bossa Nova lately. Cool stuff. You should, too.

Oh and the Mercedes Benz Mix Tape vol.5 is out. Volume 5 is all about Jazz. So get it get it get it! I think it'll only be up until the 15th of March.

California!

A couple of friends I haven't been able to hang out with for a while now...

Some pictures I took during my US trip. These ones I took when I was in The OC!

sunsetoc
Sunset ala-OC.

republicanrichhousesintheOC
The million dollar homes. They've a pretty good view of the sunset I took a picture of. Probably hikes up the property taxes/values (the sunset).

balboaisland4
A view of the newport beach front. The houses fronting this port can go for as low as $2 million to around $5 million each. ;-) And they are just a couple of hundred square meters each!

balboaisland1
I don't watch the show, but this place is supposed to be one of the places where the kids from The OC hang out.

balboaisland2
Balboa bar shop picture 2.

balboaisland3
Like in the Philippines, establishments in the US have to stake their claim that they are "The Original"! Haha! A couple of blocks down, there was another balboa bar stand selling balboa bars and frozen bananas -- sans The OC autographed poster. Talk about capitalizing on the popularity of the show.

Oh and from the creators of Family Guy, the pilot episode of American Dad just aired a couple of days ago!

Iris got herself a pink iPod mini, and I was able to snag a podsleeve for my little soap just for around Php 500.00! There's a big sale on 3G iPod podsleeves over at Digital Walker. I think there's one in parksquare.

I'm liking Lost a lot. Pretty cool show. Watched it a lot during my vacation over at my cousin's house in Glendale. J.J Abrams, the same guy behind Alias created Lost. ;-)

I'm back

I'm back to blogging. Since my last post, I've been able to go the US, season 4 of 24 is out, the golden globes happened, I've shaved my hair bald and grown it back again, I've finished GTA: San Andreas, my Sims 2 character is soo fucking filthy rich (no cheats ha!), I've been able to read the extremely enjoyable Bone One Volume Collection, plus a couple of other shitty events.. and I guess, shittiest of all -- my group and I haven't passed our thesis.

Anyway. Lemme start this year with this post (a good month and a day overdue). I'll try to post stuff about my trip to the US, places I've been to, people I've met, and everything in between and out. ;-)

I'm going back to watching episodes of Lost for now, and going through the bunch of books, and dvd's I've accumulated for the past months. ;-)
